Michael Carrick will be appointed interim manager until a temporary boss is hired within the next 48 hours, according to Sky Sports.
The temporary boss will be hired externally, with the hope they will have ties with the club.
United currently sit in sixth position, eleven points off the top four.
A club statement on Tuesday confirmed that “manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect”.
The statement continued: “The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.
“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”
